I believe eventually we should go to Mars with a very carefully planned manned mission, but all precautions should be taken, with the preservation of human life being of utmost importance... So it will be and should be an expensive project.
Going back to the shuttle, I take it you are still not convinced the relatively large chunk of foam that hit the wing on takeoff was responsible for the chain of events leading up to the breakup of Columbia? From the video of the actual event, and the recent testing, I myself am pretty well convinced at this point the "smoking gun" has been found, even if the exact speed of the "flying foam" was not exactly duplicated.
