If you're worried about people in government who may infer in a very roundabout way that the Constitution be changed to fit international law (a very shakey inference), then you must be out-and-out horrified by someone who actually tried to change one of the fundamental principles of the Constitution, both in spirit and letter. Someone who would advocate and even draft (in secret) changes that would suspend the centuries-old fundamental right of habeas corpus. Someone who would advocate throwing citizens into jail without charges or benefit of representation. Someone who would advocate indefinite sentences without charges for the convenience of law enforcement. Someone who could come to your house in the middle of the night and throw you in jail for any reason, and never have to say why, and potentially never release you.

Who could that scoundrel be?

John Ashcroft.
