"Not so long ago Cisco and others were saying that FC was losing out to gigabit ethernet. I do not see that happening any time soon."

Sure looks that way. I would like to know how much of a role QLogic is going to play in that. For example, how much Q tech (if any) is in the mentioned Cisco switch and IP module?

It is also a lesson in the advantages of being a big versus a small player in terms of bringing sophisticated products to market even when you are late to the game.

Just to jump in for a moment...

There was a lot of speculation that FC and Gigabit Ethernet would be competitive but, in practice, they're not. They're actually complementary in many ways. This popular misconception is probably because of the use of the word Network in SAN. In the simplest terms, Gigabit Ethernet is typically used to connect computers/servers to each other while FC is used to connect computers/servers to storage devices.

Right now, there is no way to connect ethernet to a storage device directly. The closest thing is a storage router such as Cisco's 5428 (with the Q inside).
