VHS vs. Beta was more than that. The rest of the world would not let Sony have most of the machines and own the totality of the technology - so they gathered together under a competing technology and flooded the market with cheaper boxes.

Art, "The longer recording time per tape is what made VHS the standard of choice" - maybe indirectly but in my view it was the fact that the movie rental industry went with VHS that decided the outcome of the war.
