If I recall correctly, Sony refused to license the beta technology, preferring to create a monopoly -- with results similar to what Apple did with the Macintosh, until it was too late to matter. QUALCOMM is unlike either Sony or Apple, having encouraged manufacturers to obtain a license at prices that are hard to refuse. Put another way, QUALCOMM has generally done all the right things to get its technology into the marketplace, in the face of a great deal of opposition.
