Merger or being bought by another company will do the same. Just look at those steel companies.

in all seriousness, why not? it has a $20 billion equity market cap; it could not be a less relevant company. BK is not the same as liquidation. government had no problem letting KMart and MCI go under, and those were much more important companies than GM.

anyway, the government doesn't have a choice. GM cannot generate sufficient cash to meet its future liabilities, and the gov't can't either.
