SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX), a leading provider of high-performance wireless local area networking (WLAN) and wireless wide area networking (WWAN) products, today announced it is a principal member of the newly expanded WiMAX Forum and will also have a seat on the board of directors. WiMAX Forum is a nonprofit corporation formed to promote and certify the compatibility and interoperability of devices using the IEEE* 802.16 specifications.

"Proxim is a leader in outdoor point-to-multipoint wireless networks and is a strong supporter of industry standards. We expect that WiMAX(TM) will be a positive force for promoting 802.16 standards and industry compatibility with it," said Kevin Duffy, senior vice president and general manager of Proxim's WAN division. "With WiMAX certification, wireless customers can be assured that the 802.16 products they will buy from Proxim adhere to a recognized standard and are interoperable with other 802.16-based solutions."

The IEEE 802.16a standard for WirelessMAN(TM), which was completed in January 2003, specifies a common broadband wireless access platform for vendors. Proxim, with WiMAX, will work to promote this standard and will participate in certification programs to ensure compliance with other 802.16 products. Certification will provide assurance to customers that the products they buy offer the price and performance advantages of a standards-based product. Proxim believes this should lead to increasing adoption of wireless broadband solutions, just as the Wi-Fi Alliance has fueled the growth of 802.11 wireless LANs.
