I had a nice, long reply all typed up and I accidentally closed the browser. :/ Hate that!

I think there tends to be two types of male rage. One is the egocentric sort, which I believe is caused by an inability to cope with disagreeable circumstances that affront a control complex.

Then there is the second sort, which is a kind of male malaise, or marginality of personality. I think it's a self-esteem issue and usually caused or accompanied by severe depression. Many loners aren't loners by choice, but are loners because of an inability to engage others socially (social awkwardness) or a kind of self-reinforcing, self-sabotaging negative behavior. They may be surrounded by family and friends that care very much about them, but they are consumed with the belief that they are unwanted and alone. This belief is reinforced by negative behavior which tends to isolate and erode self-esteem. Extreme cases go "Travis Bickle" and start off the deep end.

I really got intrigued by this when I was in college and studied several primate sociality studies. In one, a small group of monkeys (I believe macaques) were isolated at a very young age from the group so they did not learn the social meaning of the complex of body langauges and vocalizations of normal socialized monkeys. As juveniles, they were rejoined with the group and observed. The isolated monkeys were unable to engage the normal group socially, and tended to huddle together in a corner and didn't engage each other socially. Eventually they became psychotic.
