He also suspended habeas corpus, watched his family tank, unleashed Grant/Sherman/Sheridan, and made himself the target of assassins to save the Union. ...If it were feasible to "middle passage" the slaves back to Africa or elsewhere to save the Union would he have done that too? <Ooo Hoo> Which party first got blacks elected to public office in the South? I'll have to take a wild guess at this one as my recollection of the period is completely traumatized by the regional custom of late night equestrian visitations. ...I'll say that it was the Republicans who ID'd the first crop of black officials to be left high and dry by a "well intentioned" Washington administration. <ugh> Which party first appointed blacks as high-ranking Cabinet members, including Secretary of State, an office very close to the Presidency in the line of succession? Now this is tough. It's all I can do to remember Presidents much less their "high-ranking" cabinet officers. Then too I'm going to have to make another wild stab at guessing what your definition of "blacks" is! Does Ralph Bunch count? ...Oh heck let's just go with the flow and say Republican.
