Actually, although there is rivalry with the Chinese, there is no especial hostility. Saudi Arabia has links to terrorism, not necessarily greater than those of the Ba'athist regime. However, we have leverage with them. At one point, we had leverage with Saddam. It proved to be insufficient, and he was too big a bastard, so we ceased being amicable.

It has nothing to do with a "look", but with expressed intentions we had every reason to believe would be acted upon when he could get away with it. Remember, Hitler more or less outlined what he intended to do, too. In various speeches, both about Ba'athist objectives and about the Gulf War, Saddam made clear that he would foment acts of terrorism and unleash weapons of mass destruction against us given half a chance.......
