Possibly an indirect role in that American forces were in Saudi Arabia to enforce the no fly zone which aggravated bin Laden. Also Saddam was the money launder for the attacks on the Israelis. Kept that fire going.

Direct role seems to be more in the nature of aiding the training for the attack.

No matter what, still a festering boil on the face of the world.
