<We the Free expect a bit more than that.>

Follow the chain of cause and effect back to the original source, and you will see that it is War that is to blame. Consistently, every time America goes to war, the Bill of Rights is thrown out the window for the duration. Every time, from the Napoleanic War's (Alien and Sedition Acts), through Lincoln's suppression of free speach and assembly, to WWI (the violent destruction of the Socialist Party and associated trade unions), to the Cold War's McCarthyism, to today's Guantanamo concentration camp. Every time we go to war, the nation has a spasm of fear and bigotry, a witchhunt to enforce RightThought and RightAction, and silence the "traitors". In America, war is incompatible with freedom. What is happening today, will be remembered by our grandchildren, the same way we remember McCarthyism.
