Well, to be fair, the big plus on hydro cars is not that the energy is 'free', but that they pollute a lot less. 'Immobile' energy producing sources can be used to generate 'fuel' for mobile entities, such as cars. Thus, you could see large solar and wind farms generating energy that replaces the need for as much fossil fuel, and reduces the amount of emitted pollution.

There is technology to use low level atomic blasts to free the oil from shale and tar sands. Of course the left wouldn't like to see that done.

...Recognized as the world's largest hydrocarbon deposit with over 1.7 trillion barrels of oil in reserves, the Athabasca Tar Sands,

That's tar sands in Canada. In the U.S. we have oil shale deposits containing even more than that (and we've not yet even counting proven coal and crude reserves):

emdaapg.org

...By far the largest known deposit is the Green River oil shale in western United States which contains a total estimated resource of nearly 1.5 trillion barrels. In Colorado alone, the total resource reaches one trillion barrels of oil. The Devonian black shales of eastern United States are estimated at 189 billion barrels...

...The total world resource of oil shale is estimated at 2.6 trillion barrels. This figure is considered to be conservative in view of the fact that oil shale resources of some countries are not reported and other deposits have not been fully investigated...

Yes, we'd better park our SUV's and all ride bicycles before we use up these limited resources... LOL!!!

You haven't at all shown me where we have 200 years of recoverable reserves in N. America. The tar sands are called that because they are as thick as tar, and need a lot of heat to extract. The same goes for shale deposits. Wishful thinking isn't proven recoverable oil.

< all this dreaming about hydrogen power neglects the fact that this energy source does indeed take massive amounts of energy to produce >

Wrong, but it doesn't matter to those who THINK they know about energy. Are you calling Bush a dreamer about hydrogen?

<<And here's another morsel to chew on; all this dreaming about hydrogen power neglects the fact that this energy source does indeed take massive amounts of energy to produce. Just as idiots like the California Air Board bureaucrats mandated electric cars, assuming that electricity just grows on trees as well... >>

We also find the demo-libs touting the benefits of ethanol for their big farm buddies to the tune of billions of taxpayer dollars. They failed to tell the public the cost to produce one gallon of the product runs between $1.60 and 2.50 as a subsidy and the energy required to produce it is more than that obtained by its use in automobiles. Ethanol also produces 20% or so less power than gasoline, bringing down the average mileage per automobile and creating its own pollution.
