I don't think so. Financial ruin would probably not be possible now, in that he could make millions on the story, if it were true. I think this is a case where the simplest explanation, that he screwed up and listened to a wacko, is the right one. Very tiny chance that this Wilkinson was real, and someone got to him, but I think even that is a whopper... btw: I did the search on Terrance J Wilkinson, and got right to the story (albeit using Yahoo search).
