If you had read Zbigniew Brzezinski's "The Grand Chessboard" you would already know. The U.S. national interest to be served there was to counter the Serbs, who are Slavs and natural allies of the Russians. The Kosovo invasion had a lot to do with "spheres of influence" and forward basing. It had little or nothing to do with the purported humanitarian goals.
