I had been against the Iraq war, because I am anti-imperialist. There is a fundamental contradiction between the principles in the American Declaration of Independence, and the idea of U.S. colonies.

Now, however, I'm beginning to think that the most important reason for opposing this, and further foreign adventures, is not because of what it does to Iraqis and American soldiers, but because of what it does to American civil society. There is a consistent pattern, that, during America's wars, the Bill of Rights gets trashed for the duration. Beginning with the Alien and Sedition Acts during the Napoleanic Wars, 200 years ago. Lincoln closed newspapers and jailed editors in the North. McCarthyism. The Patriot Act.
