Tom, Telecom New Zealand is the monopoly rip off merchant charging US$4 per megabyte for casual users. Keep in mind that's for 1xRTT running at maybe 80 kbps so to get 400 megabytes per month would take some doing. One would need a lot of hours on the notebook.

Plus there's the Gtran or other PCMCIA charge, which is US$700 or so to get set up.

Yes, it's a Kiwi sky-high pricing scheme that Telecom is charging. That's government-assisted monopoly for you.
