One of the main problems for Spanish speaking children is their parents, most of whom insist on speaking in their native tongue at home constantly, and whose knowledge of the English language is shameful, even after many of them have been living here for twenty years or more.

According to the educational research, the children who do best are the ones whose native language is supported WHILE they learn a new language. Where the L1, native language, is cut off, the children do the worst. Guess which system we have?

For the very best results you must teach the child academic skills in the L1, and instruct using total physical response, in the L2. This is because CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency )takes about 7 years to establish- CALP is the ability to be taught, at grade level, in academic subjects. BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) on the other hand, can be picked up in a year- and frequently is mistaken for CALP by the ignorant.
