Laura Bush, unlike Hillary Clinton as First Lady, is not a political figure, by design...We didn't elect her...

I think you're self contradicting. Context here is First Lady, that's prior to Hillary Clinton getting elected as Senator. You're differentiation isn't "elected", because you indicate that Hillary Clinton as First Lady, was a political figure, but Laura Bush as first Lady is not. It seems then that the differentiator is active or visibly active in politics, when there is no specific threshold of what level of activity pushes an individual from a e.g., public person to a political person. Therefore you shouldn't have even mentioned "elect" as even relevant.

In any case, the First Lady has a political role. She attends political events; she represents the US when other heads of State and their spouses hang out for some ribs and beer at the White House. I have no doubt that when the First Lady talks to the spouse of another Head of State, they don't stick to talking about cookie recipes. Whether we agree or disagree with that role is entirely a separate issue.

Take a look at this link and say that Laura Bush is not a political figure?
