Ridge is off riding a "Hobby Horse." Don't worry about Ashcroft, this guy will violate a lot of civil rights, and stick his nose into areas outside his mandate. All in the name of "Homeland Security." He has an easy target this time.

Homeland Security Targets Child Predators

The agency created to combat terrorism is now targeting those who prey on children.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge announced "Operation Predator" yesterday. The initiative aims to crack down on child predators' crimes by pulling together fragmented investigative and intelligence resources. It will target illegal immigrants and foreign nationals who have avoided deportation.

"The protection of our most vulnerable citizens, our children, is a critical component of our mission," Ridge said. "Harming a child in any manner or form is a despicable, despicable thing."

An initial, weeklong nationwide sweep by the Homeland Security Department rounded up 89 foreigners. They had been convicted of sex offenses but had evaded law enforcement's deportation efforts.

"The welcome mat to our nation has been pulled," Ridge said.
