Iraq may have been a Carlyle type war, that is fought for and controlled by special interests in the oil and defence industry closely tied to the Administration. As we know now, thre was no real imminent threat from Saddam, so apart from wiping out other issues during the November election period or some kind of personal revenge, I see no other reasons why Bush had to rush to war the way he did. We could have easily given UN inspectors another 6 months and clamped down tight on Saddam, thereby gaining credibility from the world community not losing it. We'd also haev saved hundreds of billions and hundreds of US lives.
