Saturday I was about 8km from the finish in Morzine, not much to see, Frenchman Richard Virenque(who was kicked out with his whole friggen team a few years ago for doping) won and took the yellow jersey for one day, getting the french all fired up. Lance went by me drinking from a water bottle, drafting behind two team mates, so no biggie. Sunday I was about halfway up Alpe d`Hue along with several hundred thousand other bicycle freaks. Had to wait 5 hours in 90 degree heat to see the guys for a few seconds, worth it of course. I think it was Beloki that went by first, with Lance quickly closing down the gap. Hamilton was on Lance`s wheel despite riding with a broker collar bone, one of the gutsiest sports performances ever. I dont care if that guy has morphine in his water bottles, its truly amazing the ride he is having. I`ve never seen Lance Armstrong ride in person before, but still you could tell he just didn`t have it like in years past. It will be very interesting Friday to see if Lance has got his legs back after a rest day and some flat stages and can put some time into Vinokourov in the time trial, and even more so maybe Iban Mayo. The French papers are pointing out that Mayo rides for a Basque team so he will have huge fan support in the Pyrannes. On Morzine it wasn`t very steep where I was, which made it even more amazing how big a gear the pros could turn, and how smooth and efficient they were. On Alpe d`Huez, it was a HOT HOT day and they had already ridden over the col de Galibier so the pros were dead. When the main group went by some were chatting with each other while others looked like they were about to fall over and die, then there were the stragglers, the vast throngs on the moutain already walking or riding down and stopping and cheering them on as they struggled up. After walking halfway up d`huez and getting my spot, I watched literally thousands of people ride up. There was people of all kinds, mainly Lance wannabe`s as about 1 in 5 had some kind of Trek carbon fiber road bike.(when I bought mine a few years ago they were kind of sneered at by the bicycling elite) There was also old ladies, like late 60`s going up on bikes that were 30 years old, lots of freaks riding heavy ass mountain bikes the suspension giving with each pedal, a few guys that looked like lance, out of the saddle riding like they were on a stair climber except gee they were going slow, and then I would look and they would have a triple ring on the front and were in a real granny gear. There were guys pulling their babies up on little carts behind their bike, 10 year old kids cranking right on up the hill. There was the American guy and wife walking up with the flag, stopping gasping for air every so often, where they would be passed by the German guy and wife carrying the German flag, and stopping every so often to smoke a cigarette. If you are any kind of bicycle freak Alpe d`Huez is a must do. I have to do it again since I was too fat to ride up it. Will have to come back when i`m in shape and struggle to do the ride that Lance and those old old ladies make look so easy.
