Bears Should Break Out the Old Spice

Last Thursday, we got some "bad" number in employment claims. It was weak and the market freaked out. By Thursday afternoon, when I was making fun of some of the bears out there, including my best contrary indicator, who has been shorting the QQQs (QQQ:Amex - news - commentary - research - analysis), I was getting email from dozens of sources about how we were headed into the big storm.

When I wrote "don't sweat it, get some deodorant" I was greeted with more derision. Of course, my congratulations for Tom "Right as Rain" Kurlak created even more negative catcalls.

To which, all I can say is, what the heck does the bears' email look like? Can they even bear to look at their email? Is it just a torrent of abuse? Or do the bear intelligentsia stick together, somehow energized, if not comforted, by each other's negativity?

My favorites are always comments like "That's the least rigorous analysis I have ever seen," which I got in spades after the "deodorant" piece. It had the effect of galvanizing bears into realizing that I had started some sort of hunting season on them. Talk to the environmentalist hand!

Me, I am a simple person. I want to be right. How I get to be right is my business, although I do my best to share it.

But when I am right, I think that the equation should change. I think next time I break out the deodorant line, some of these bears should stop emailing and start applying the Old Spice!
