Agreed. There are valid and useful government expenditures in a modern 'mixed economy', above and beyond just the national defense....

But I truly doubt that port dredging and beach-front replenishment projects paid for by the government are all that good of investments. ...Particularly not good enough to justify going into long-term debt for.

(If the private markets won't finance something - such as nuclear power plant construction - because the plants cost 7 times the cost of gas-fired plants to build - then usually that's telling you something useful about the expected financial returns of the 'investment')

By the way, the bulk of education expenses are locally borne.
