Reading Wealth and Democracy by Kevin Phillips right now. Interesting read - he points out that the evolution (devolution?) of an economy always seems to proceed from real broad-based strength that lifts everyone to a narrowing until all that is left is the finance industry. And all the elites believe everything is just fine because they are making a return on their investment, even as things wither away lower on the vine.

Kind of reminds me of my pea plants. I went out there yesterday to see if there were any peas left. I found plants that are still producing a last few peas at the top, even as the bulk of the vine is completely dead down near the ground. The top of the plant is the last to succumb to the truth, and by the time it realizes what is going on, the plant is long since dead and its fate sealed.

So it will be with our elites.
