The deficit is even worse than it seems. The $455 Billion deficit is offset by $150 Billion in Social Security taxes spent on other programs. The real deficit is equal to 5.6% of GDP.

The admission of the Bush Administration about the size of the budget deficit is big news because the problem is much bigger than they want to admit. These deficits will be a drag on the economy as it tries to recover.
