No, he was becoming a threat and a problem. His indictments had became media carnivals, drawing attention away from the rest of the gov't. And with the increasing media attention, his power was growing. What had once been a pit bull was now a roaring lion.

Actually he was very rough on a particular Army General who was not being forthright and admitted so later. This angered some in the Senate and hence they censured him. Ike invoked "executive privilege" that forbid the Army from discussing matters that McCarthy was interested in.
