I agree about our policies not being popular in Asia. On the street in China the people were actually happy about all the terrorism against the US because they do not like the way the US throws its weight around. No superpower lasts forever, be it Rome, England, or the US. China will be the next superpower in the latter half of this century, and the US is continuously engaging it in order to stave off the inevitable. That's the pattern throughout history when a power is losing its grip. I think the US policy in Asia is the best one we can have under the circumstances. Unlike other parts of the world, the Asians can separate politics and business, as money is King. No replies necessary about how the US will remain powerful the next 100-years, etc, etc. 1.3 Billion people and an economy growing exponentially is a powerful combination. Add in improved education and huge foreign investment and you have a recipe for an economic powerhouse the likes we've never seen.

I agree with you about the sars excuse actually. Yup... I've been sayin this here and there for some time. Michael Dell smirked and said "good managers manage around stuff like SARS, Dock Strikes, etc. all the time." LRCX CEO Bagley said they were seeing higher orders and it was an excuse their competitors were using (NVLS I believe said they wre seeing SARS troubles....) Carly Fiornia of HP said it was an excuse... not an excuse for China Air or any airlines that fly from there to the US. Several I know that live there canceled vacations to see families in the US... but many here that lost jobs are teaching in Taiwan until the job market picks up here.
