Pearly, I did throw in the booze and baccy for fun. I was around in the good old days when we all had lots of jobs to choose from and booze and baccy were standard and in quantity.

Taxes on baccy were lower. But I think booze was much the same.

In East Dulwich in London in 1974, the couple and baby downstairs from us in a three level house [they had the middle level, we had the leak in the middle of the bed] had a dream in life. It was to get into a council flat. We, passing through, following our own dreams, were amazed at the lack of hope and inability they had to understand how to run their money and lives better.

She smoked and he had a clerical job. He got a bonus so they blew it on a swish dinner out. She'd scream and hit the really cute little infant daughter. He ran out of money for a bus so walked all the way to London.

I can't imagine them getting anywhere. But at least these days, they'd have a council flat and lots of mod cons. At the time, a calculator cost me 100 pounds. Now the equivalent would be 3 pounds.

People make choices and good choices can make a big difference.
