DJ Greenspan/30-Yr Tsy -2: Debate Likely With Deficits

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Wednesday he believed a debate on whether to bring back the 30-year Treasury bond will eventually come up amid an era of growing federal budget deficits.

Greenspan made his comments Wednesday in response to a question from Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., formerly a top executive at Goldman Sachs.

Corzine asked Greenspan if it was time for the Treasury to reconsider bringing the bond back, noting that at the time it stopped issuing new bonds, government forecasters were expecting budget surpluses well into the future. Now the U.S. is set to post a record annual budget deficit this year and next. The Treasury stopped issuing 30-year bonds in 2001.

While Greenspan wouldn't give his personal opinion on the issue he said, "I'm going to be interested in hearing the various debates and arguments on both sides of the issue, which I think eventually will materialize for exactly the reasons you raise, senator."

He said the decision on whether to bring back the 30-year bond will rest with the Treasury Department but that the Federal Reserve would be involved in any discussions about the issue.
