Thanks for that NR article.

<Our best strategy consists of two programs, one defensive and one offensive. The first is to support pro-Western, pro-democracy mullahs in Najaf and Karbala. They have sent a message to me (roughly two dozen of them), offering to help us in exchange for physical protection and money to give as charity to followers.>

This is exactly what I had proposed, earlier (#7, 9):
Message 18801778

If Muslim clerics are directly defended by U.S. soldiers, then those clerics will be seen as our stooges. Same with funding. We would need to launder the money, maybe through the Malaysian government. And we desperately need to find Muslim soldiers to fight on our side in Iraq. Otherwise, any Iraqi who sides with us, will lose legitimacy (if defended by U.S. soldiers), or be killed (if not defended by anyone).

Could I have your comments on this:

More comments on NR article:

<The second program is to support the anti-regime forces inside Iran.>

This will be counterproductive. If we try to destabilize the Iranian regime, we'll create a "rally round the government" effect, exactly like was created in the U.S. after 9/11. It will give an excuse for the Mullahs to violently crush all reform movements. It will align the nationalists with the clerics, against the U.S. What is needed, is to isolate the clerics. A Sunshine policy, like what S. Korea is doing with N. Korea, is what is needed for Iran, to weaken the mullahs.
