An American soldier died and three others were wounded today when their convoy came under attack by a rocket-propelled grenade in western Baghdad, the military said.

In two other attacks, at least three more American soldiers were wounded, two when an explosion — suspected to be a landmine — destroyed their vehicle, and one in an explosion at a bank in western Baghdad, said Cpl. Todd Pruden, an American military spokesman in Baghdad.

In another incident today, the mayor of Hadita, a town west of Baghdad, was murdered along with one of his nine sons, Corporal Pruden said. The mayor had been hand-picked by coalition forces to run the town, the spokesman said.
