I'd take a microscope into the shop, take photographs of each stone at say 50X mag. Those stupid eyeglasses they use are crap imho. Then start complaining about the flaws found, and imply the shop was being run by crooks.

Of course I did exactly that when confronted by the same situation as John about 17 years ago. But I'm me...
