4:38PM CORRECT: QLogic meets analysts estimates (QLGC) by Russ Britt
LOS ANGELES (CBS.MW) -- QLogic Corp. (QLGC) reported net income of $31.7 million, or 33 cents a share, for the first quarter ended June 29, up 37 percent from last year's profits of $23.1 million, or 24 cents a share. Revenue was $126.2 million vs. $99 million, up 28 percent. The company met the consensus of analysts surveyed by First Call. Prior to the earnings announcement, QLogic shares fell $1.21, or 3.3 percent, to $51.35 Wednesday. (Corrects year-ago numbers, which the company says were revised because of a change in accounting rules.)


4:24PM Energy stocks remain under pressure at close ($OSX, $OIX, $UTY, $XNG) by Lisa Sanders
DALLAS (CBS.MW) -- Energy stocks remained lower at the close after being under pressure all session. The PSE Oil Service Index (OSX) lost 1 percent to close at 85.89, the CBOE Oil Index (OIX) shed 0.1 percent to close at 263.63, the Philadelphia Utility Index (UTY) sank 1.5 percent to close at 271.69, and the Amex Natural Gas Index (XNG) closed at 186.96, down 1.6 percent.


4:15PM Capital One Q2 profit $286.8M or $1.23 a share (COF) by Luisa Beltran
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Capital One Financial Corp. said Wednesday that second quarter earnings improved to $286.8 million, or $1.23 per share, compared to $213.1 million, or $0.92 per share, for the same time period in 2003. Earnings tracker Thomson/First Call had expected $1.10 for the quarter. Capital One (COF) said it continues to expect EPS of at least $4.55 for 2003. Its managed charge-off rate dropped to 6.32 percent for the quarter, down from 6.47 in the first quarter.


4:12PM KMP earns grow 17% in second quarter (KMP) by Lisa Sanders
DALLAS (CBS.MW) -- Kinder Morgan Energy Partners posted a 17 percent increase in second-quarter profit as all its businesses reported improved earnings vs. the year-ago period. KMP's (KMP) net income increased by 17 percent in the second quarter to $169.0 million, or 48 cents a unit, compared to $144.5 million, or 48 cents a unit, for the same period in 2002. Analysts were expecting KMP to earn 50 cents a unit, on average.


4:10PM Metals shares close lower (GFI) by Myra P. Saefong
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Metals mining stocks closed lower, still pressured by recent declines in gold prices. The Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index ($XAU) closed at 73.44, down 1.8 percent, and the Amex Gold Bugs Index (HUI) fell 1.4 percent to close at 141.66. Shares of Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI) were among the biggest decliners, down 3.4 percent to close at $10.63.


4:09PM AMR results boost airline stocks ($XAL, MEH, AMR) by August Cole
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Airline stocks ended Wednesday higher after American Airlines' corporate parent reported narrower-than-expected losses. AMR Corp. (AMR) ended up $1.10 to $11.66 while the Amex Airline Index ($XAL) rose 2.9 percent. Also surging, Midwest Express Holdings (MEH) rose more than 20 percent to $3.10 after announcing labor concessions.
