The Samsung Group said yesterday that it has come to an agreement with Nokia to boost cooperation in technology development and global marketing.

Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee met with Nokia President and CEO Jorma Ollila at the Finnish mobile handset maker's headquarters in Helsinki Wednesday.

They agreed to beef up their collaboration in software and other high-tech businesses and concurred that there are wide-ranging business areas with potential for cooperation, Samsung officials reported.

Lee praised Nokia's contribution to its country's economic development and its emergence as a world information-technology powerhouse.

Before their luncheon meeting, Lee visited an exhibition of Nokia's latest products.

Lee was accompanied by top executives of Samsung affiliates including Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Yoon Jong-yong.

Lee is now on a European tour after attending an International Olympic Committee conference held in Prague June 28. He will return late this month after visiting Britain and Sweden. <<

NOK's problem is like MOT. Too many cheap handsets are flooding the market.

I find it a little odd that VOD would so publicly blast their largest supplier. I knew the relationship was rocky but it must be even worse than I imagined.

Vodafone says own handset sales outpace Nokia - paper

HELSINKI (Reuters) - British mobile phone giant Vodafone's own-branded handsets have sold better than those of market leader Nokia and the Finnish tech giant can expect to lose more ground to competitors among Vodafone clients, Finland's Kauppalehti business daily reported on Monday.

Currently around 40 percent of Vodafone clients use Nokia handsets, but that will likely fall in the next few years, Vodafone Chief Executive Christopher Gent said in an interview with the newspaper.

He said Vodafone-branded handsets made by Japan's third-largest mobile phone maker Sharp Corp. are "flying off the shelves" and outstripping sales of Nokia's phones.

"It is highly unlikely that four years from now Nokia's share of our mobile phone sales will be close to 40 percent. A number of handset makers have come to the market and they are eating Nokia's market share," Gent said.

Sharp announced last October it would ship 400,000 camera phones to Vodafone in a bid to take its domestic success overseas.

Gent also said Vodafone will at the end of this year complete construction of a UK network for providing third-generation mobile phone services which would become available to clients next year or in 2005.

Vodafone's financing of the network this year is around three billion euros ($3.36 billion) and next year some four billion.
