It would be more bearable if it were only the dumb, the vicious, and the shortsighted that got killed in warfare. In that case, I could find solace in thinking wars served at least an evolutionary purpose, a cleansing of the gene pool from these traits.

Instead, the vicious SEND the young into war to die for their schemes. In the age of modern warfare, one-on-one combat is almost non-existent. So relative strength and intelligence on a personal basis does not even count.

In the end, perhaps the meek will indeed inherit the earth, for only they will escape the ruthless killing :-(
