There's definitely a connection. According to various news reports: in exchange for Blair's support on the Iraq invasion Bush had to promise Blair he would finally take an active role in the mid-east peace process. I highly doubt these current efforts will be very productive. But it is infinitely better for us to be involved than not as Bush's catastrophic non-involvement during the first two years of his term illustrated in the blood of Israelis and Palestinians. Steve
