Dipy, Re: On a more serious note, I wonder if we will ever be able to get out of Iraq It is useful to review the history of empire. In 1839, the British marched 17,000 troops and several thousand more camp followers in Afghanistan in the First Afghan War. In 1842, the sole army survivor walked out of the country, unarmed. Camp followers were either slaughtered or enslaved. In 1916, the British marched in Mesopotamia. They intended to hold it, just as they'd held India for decades. They were gone by 1932. In ~1950, the U.S. began to use the C.I.A. to influence Vietnamese politics. The U.S. military left the country, after Congress finally cut off the funding, in 1975. So, on average, extricating a military force is going to take a while. ******** Re: The very thought gives me the chills! That's hard to imagine when the temperature is 47 degrees Celsius.
