well....

I will tell you the best books I have read-
all those Bostswana books-
The 1st Ladies Detective Agency
The Tears of the Giraffe
Morality for Beautiful Girls
The Kalahari Typing School for Men
those are GREAT books- but they read quickly- I think I would check them out of the library. Mistress Coffin was a quick read too.

now a slower read is "Batavia's Graveyard"- the story of the "mad heretic who led the history's bloodiest mutiny". Absolutely fantastic read- non-fiction. You will learn about the Dutch East India Company, the birth of Anabaptism and off shoots of it- as well as fascinating meaty details of the life of people at that time (1620')- interestingly- this is the same time period that we see in the beginning of Mistress Coffin.

Have you read Rose Tremain? She wrote Restoration- that was made into a movie. Her new book The Colour (about New Zealand's gold rush) was very good- but I like Music and Silence better (but I think you can get that for 5.99 at Barnes and Noble- in hardcover- in the discount books section). Hunters and Gatherers was a very funny spoof of new age religions catering to the female goddess.

If you like mysteries and Jane Austen- I can highly recommend the Jane Austen Mysteries (she has a new one just out)- I wouldn't buy them since they read fast.

A Murder in Mayfair was a quick fun read- from Barnes and Nobles bargain books (3.99 maybe?)

Now a book I WOULD buy is- How Proust Can Change Your Life- absolutely a keeper. I plan to read it to my classes. Sparkling writing- aboslutely brilliant, imo. A real thinkers book. Also helps if you like Proust- but it probably isn't essential to have read him- you'll feel like you have after you finish the book- and it's a lot shorter than the real thing :-)

Oh- two GREAT short story collections-
I would buy these to own (i did buy them)
The Shell Collector
and
Ship Fever

Wonderful! If you like short stories.

I've got so many other books I like- but those are the ones I read this summer, so far, so those are the ones I remember.
