I have never understood the order in the phrase "Trust, but verify." It seems that it should be "Verify, then Trust."

In the original, "Trust" seems merely to mean "Give the benefit of the doubt." But, that is hardly "Trust," since Trust must always be earned.

I like the old accounting adage
Trust, but verify

Works with:

work (boss, co-worker, subordinates)
family (children, spouse, siblings)
one's self

Does it work with God? (not sure myself about that...)
