I read it [Blair congressional speech], then I watched it. Night and Day difference. Watch it on video on CSPAN. He had Congress in the palm of his hand. Doesn't have Churchill's bombast. Quiet, contained, and builds to a crescendo.

One thing that impressed me was his insight into our way of thinking. I don't know of many US politicians who could go to England and be so on target and in phase with their view of things. Of course, this just raises the old joke about "in the US they don't know what the rest of the world is...."

The common language is clearly crucial here, as very few French commentators or politicians have a clue about the US. We admittedly don't fare much better in observing France, and that's a western culture, so one can imagine understanding what Muslims really think.

It's good to have someone like Blair on our side rather than against us. We have more than enough enemies (over this Iraq business among other things) as it is by now.

I don't have broadband but will see if I can find a listenable copy of his speech somewhere.
