This viewpoint is incorporate in a metric known as the Sharpe ratio- Basically -

Returns / Volitility.

Next step is the 'efficent frontier', then Modern Portfolio Theory....

The book came in the mail today and I started reading. Those outsized gains reported happened before the bubble burst, of course. Still, buying a strong [read 'expensive'] stock hoping it will get stronger is an option.
