I don't think Americans even think about pedestrian centered living- since most of us didn't grow up with that, it isn't in our thoughts. I have seen urban designers trying to deal with the issue- I don't know how popular their communities and plans are, though.

Why did it jump to 1972, skipping that really funny stuff of 1971??

1963 was funny enough for me, although 1971 is more funny.
