Its like watching a train wreck develop in slow motion... Funny you say that, I went to sleep Fri. night after all of the news, and woke 5am to a groggy vision of how things will to play out, realizing that: (a)the opposition is finally organizing and will not be silenced, seeing the usually weak-kneed Dems on Friday finally taking a stand on months of political brutality, deciding to work together for a change and "not to take it anymore", then the response from the GOP showing absolutely no contrition, conciliation, or even the slightest recognition of their actions, just more outright lies. (b) the perpetrators absolutely cannot allow inquiries, must stonewall, deny access, destroy information, massively produce disinformation, and must play out their well-planned scenarios ahead of schedule. The operant motto is Rumsfeld's quote the afternoon of 9/11, "Go massive, sweep everything up, related or not". I.e., absolute power, use terrorism as cover, disregard human life completely. (c) historically gov't/business sponsored terrorism as always escalated, new events incrementally larger than the previous to galvanize public opinion. The likely choices for the next event are for October timeframe prior to the '04 elections, and are a biowarfare plague, or radiological, such as a dirty bomb in a foreign capital, blamed on whichever convenient terrorists create the most political capital. If desperate enough, it'll be an American city. (d) Either way the polarizing of American opinion will be brutal, with those suspicious of the gov't being persecuted by those who are told critics are "unAmerican", and feds intervening to "keep the peace", which will mean round ups in sections of major cities where provacateurs cause riots. At this stage the media will be under even more complete control, opposing voices will be suppressed, and the only opposition will be in certain secured internet channels such as encrypted (illegal by Patriot II Act then) email and websites, and personal meetings, which will also be broken up under various "public safety" pretexts. (e) the further breakdown of the economy will accompany the disclosure to 2/3s of the population of the heavy-handedness of power-drunk gov't officials. Self-contained rural real estate will soar in value, central cities will be controlled due to phony riots so urban real estate will decline, along with equities except military-related. (f) a final blowoff will occur, the 2006 mid-term elections will fail to be controlled by the insiders, leaving a critical number of progressives who lead the charge for opening gov't. The most top criminals will escape penalty, lower-level insiders will be jailed. (g) We survive the brush with fascism, the economy revives, opinion turns against politicians except a few reformers, and a lesson is learned about the power that can be held by a few insiders to use the vast power of the US to secretly wage war on the American people and the rest of the world. I cheerfully related this daydream to my guests at a BBQ, a couple of whom of course then pointed out the ways in which such a scenario could turn into an irreversible nightmare... But hey, be optimistic, right? As they say, hang together or we'll hang separately <gg>
