"White House budget director Joshua Bolten called the new federal deficit figures "a legitimate subject of concern," but he said the red ink was "manageable."

Yes, we'll see how manageable it will be when interest rates are back up to 9%. Bolten is a dreamer.

Also I don't think you can accurately predict the fiscal situation 5 years out. Economic growth could easily pick up resulting in smaller the anticipated deficits.

In my experience, when it comes to the economy, its better to expect the worse and be pleasantly surprised. Already, its far worse that GOP prognosticators were predicting two years ago.

What worries me concerning the deficit is not the straight line projection of current and already planned programs but the fact that the government may add new programs or make major new expansions to old ones. Considering the current and near term future fiscal situation we won't be able to afford to do that.

You can count on new programs being added.....they already have been.
