The commander of US troops in Iraq says coalition troops are facing a classic guerrilla war following continuing attacks that show no sign of letting up.

New Central Command chief General John Abizaid also said American forces must adapt their tactics to crush an increasingly organised, cell-based resistance led by loyalists to the former regime.

Gen Abizaid told a Pentagon briefing the Iraqis "are conducting what I would describe as a classical guerrilla-type campaign against us.
