Uh, I'm only 40 so I don't remember the way others here might but I did have to listen to one of their albums when I took Pop Music Of The Counter Culture at the University of Buffalo in 1981. Fun class, I did my term paper on the Summer Of Love. One question on the final was comparing and contrasting the Jefferson Airplane's Have You Seen The Saucers to the Byrds Mr. Spaceman. Homework was listening to cuts off of or entire albums, 4-10 a week. The instructor was an academic who tried to be a hippie. Looking back he probably was a beatnick who jumped shipped b4 there were any hippies.
