Good point Malcolm. I have trouble with the definition of the word altruism and think I got it wrong. If the intention is to help, then that's altruistic whatever the outcome, if there's a cost in providing the help [such as foregoing patent rights to an idea as the Tron inventor did].

So yes, Jay's advice at the cost of his valuable time would count in the altruistic category, even if he was logically wrong and saved one person at the expense of another, for no net saving of people [though as he says, it's a spreading of the damage if several share the pain and maybe that's a good outcome].
