Giving is slow for Democrat gathering
Host committee fears missing key deadline

By Corey Dade, Globe Staff, 7/20/2003

Fund-raising for next year's Democratic National Convention has slowed to a trickle, with only $1.7 million in cash collected this year, which organizers blame on donors' reluctance to give because of a threatened federal ban on corporate and union contributions to political conventions.

The Boston host committee, now $6.3 million short of its goal for private contributions and facing uncertainty about public funding, missed the July 1 deadline for securing commitments for the entire $49.5 million convention budget. Although there is no penalty for missing the deadline, set by the Democratic National Committee, the fund-raising shortfall underscores how sharply donations of private money have fallen since Boston's triumphant announcement last year that it would host the convention.
