At the end of the original (1970-something, I think) 'Planet of the Apes', the guy escapes with the human woman he finds in prison, and as they are riding a horse along the seashore, he stops the horse, jumps down, and is crying out loud, "Nooo! This can't be!" etc, much to the confounded distress of the woman who does not understand anything.

Camera moves up ahead, and you see the statue of liberty, almost entirely buried in sand, with the torch sticking out and a bit of the head.... That is when you realize (along with the hero of the film) that 'Planet of the Apes' was Earth all along...

Pretty moving end. Much better than that of the new version, I think...
